Will Rogers end all OMNI newscasts as it cuts jobs?

THE Globe and Mail is reporting online that Rogers is going to cut jobs and end all OMNI newscasts.

And a source at OMNI in Vancouver told The VOICE that the staff are shocked and there is a staff meeting later today when things should be more clear.

He said that no one knows what’s really going on, but there are rumours that there may be some limited Chinese and Punjabi news production and Vancouver might just become a bureau.

The Globe and Mail reports that Rogers Media Inc. will cut some 100 positions from its conventional TV operations and end all newscast on its multicultural OMNI stations.

It all comes down to profits and Rogers has been desperately struggling.

The Globe and Mail says: “The Rogers Media unit of Toronto-based Rogers Communications Inc. lost $85.8-million before interest and taxes in its conventional TV operations last year, according to documents filed with the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission.”

A year ago, Keith Pelley, the president of Rogers Media, had said that most of OMNI’s revenues had come from ad sales on U.S. programs which have become more widely available in syndication and on streaming services. Those revenues had subsidized the ethnic and third-language news and information programming.
