SHORTLY after 12 noon on Wednesday (March 21), Richmond RCMP officers responded to a possible firearm call originating from a business located near Sweden Way and Bridgeport Road.

The suspect, a male in his mid-twenties, allegedly produced a pistol when confronted by a loss prevention officer. The suspect then departed in a red early 2000 model Ford pickup truck which was believed to be carjacked with the owner inside.

At around 12: 15 p.m., a coordinated effort by Richmond RCMP “Alpha” Watch officers located the pickup truck near No. 5 Road and Blundell Road. Officers then initiated a tactical takedown.

The occupants, both male, ages 26 and 60 respectively, were taken into custody. Both are residents of Richmond. No shots were fired. No injuries were reported.

A police search recovered a pistol and a small quantity of substance believed to be an illicit drug. The pistol was later determined to be a BB gun.

Three charges have been approved by Richmond Crown Counsel.

Amanpreet Singh, 26, is charged with one count of breach of probation order, one count of robbery and one count of use of an imitation firearm during the commission of an offence.

The 60-year old male, determined to be the registered owner of the pickup, was released from police custody without charge.

Police are continuing their investigation.

“Anytime our officers are confronted with firearm related calls for service, our approach is extremely measured and public safety of the utmost importance,” said Cpl. Dennis Hwang. “We consider any firearm a real and genuine threat to officer safety, unless proven otherwise.”

“We are pleased that our officers were able to resolve this high-risk situation quickly and without injury or loss of life,” added Hwang.
