VANCOUVER NPA mayoral candidate Ken Sim on Wednesday released the NPA’s environment plan for a greener, more sustainable city entitled, A Greener, Healthier City. The plan includes measures to address climate change, support carbon reduction efforts, and create more opportunities for farmers markets around the city to improve access to fresh produce and help support local farming and artisans.
“From the visionary green agenda of the Clouds of Change report in 1990 to the present day, the NPA has been at the forefront of practical actions that make Vancouver a healthier and more sustainable city,” said Sim. “We’ll continue that environmental leadership with an ambitious agenda that delivers results, not just slogans.”
The NPA environment plan moves the city forward in preparing for the impacts of climate change, including a commitment to making frequent updates to the City’s climate change strategy to account for new data and predicted timelines for impacts. It also means ensuring that the City is operationally prepared to address adverse weather conditions with additional road clearing and snow removal in the winter, said Sim.
The plan also supports the longstanding goal of making Vancouver the greenest city in the world by 2020 while also recognizing that the greenest city plan is a living document that must be open to new ideas and opportunities, and flexible enough to address emerging challenges.
The plan also includes:
- The planting of an additional 200,000 trees in the City of Vancouver by 2030 to reduce ambient air temperature, help clean our air, and reduce noise pollution.
- Doubling the number of public water refilling stations in our parks, squares, and city-owned public spaces, as well as doubling the number of water facilities for dogs.
- New permitting opportunities around the city to provide improved access to fresh produce and help support local farming and artisans.
- Pursuing new partnerships for additional gardening and instruction opportunities on City-owned land and facilities.
- Working with major regional emitters such as Port of Vancouver and YVR Airport to explore emissions reductions strategies.
- Encouraging the adoption of electric vehicles by partnering with the private sector to quadruple electric vehicle charging infrastructure over 4 years.
- Developing an action plan to accelerate sewer separation, protecting our shoreline, and ensuring Vancouverites can swim in our ocean.
