Vancouver Aquarium Releases Shadow Back in Haida Gwaii Waters

The Vancouver Aquarium Marine Mammal Rescue Centre brought a very special patient back to Haida Gwaii on September 6, thanks to the assistance of Pacific Coastal Airlines. Shadow, a premature seal pup and one of the first patients of the 2012 season, was rescued off Haida Gwaii on June 1, 2012. After 13 weeks at the Rescue Centre, he has grown into a healthy seal, and was released back to his natural habitat last Thursday morning, along with another rescued seal pup, Midnight Pearl.

Shadow was found this spring by Ryan Ashton, dock manager at the Queen Charlotte Lodge. Ashton discovered the newborn seal pup lying on rocks. With the assistance of Rescue Centre staff via telephone, he was able to create a special formula, which he hand-fed to the stranded animal to help restore his energy levels before being flown to Vancouver for rehabilitation at the Rescue Centre.
