The Chrysler 300 is the flagship sedan of the Chrysler-Fiat conglomerate. Since its introduction a decade ago, the handsome, lantern jawed 300 has been a very popular family sedan thanks to its combination of classic looks, luxury and style. The 300 comes with both V6 and V8 engines with a modern version of the legendary Hemi V8. The latest versions arrive with: updated styling, new interior, state-of-the-art technology features and improved ride and handling.
Our tester was the 2015 300 Luxury Series 300C Platinum edition in a very classy looking Jazz Blue Pearl paint finish with all-wheel drive and the optional (42,500) 5.7-litre HEMI® V8 engine with four-cylinder mode FuelSaver MDS Technology. The Hemi delivers 363 horsepower and offer an 8-speed. driver-selectable sport mode transmission. Exterior options included 20 -inch polished wheels with All-Season performance tires, Dual pane sunroof, bi-function halogen headlights, Chrome LED taillight and fog lights, platinum 300C badges and black grille with platinum surround.
The tester’s interior also had a very classy, expensive looking cream colored Indigo/linen coordinated trim. The cabin has a more upmarket, polished look with heated and cooled seats, two-toned steering wheel, dual-paned panoramic sunroof, premium leather trim throughout and even heated/cooled console cupholders up front. The leather seats have a wonderful diamond perforated finish and look very up-market. Our tester came with a number of interior options including the SafetyTec 1 package ($595) including park sense system, folding power mirrors, Blind Spot and Cross Detection system. The high end Harmon Kardon audio system ($2,500) delivers a simply stunning audio experience. Combined with the Uconnect multimedia system ($650) the 300C is one of the best places to be on a long journey. with the segment’s largest touchscreen controlling XM radio, Satnav and other entertainment functions The base price of our tester was a reasonable $43,595. Options such as the HEMI V8 engine and other goodies boosted the price to $51,125 plus destination charges of $1,695.
The V8 as tested delivers an estimated Canadian Energuide fuel rating of 14.8 L/100km in the city and 9.3 L/100km on the highway. This 300 model includes the segment-exclusive eight-speed automatic transmission with sport mode to fully optimize the steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifters and shifting speed of the transmission. Chrysler 300’s AWD system seamlessly transitions between rear-wheel drive and AWD with no driver intervention. When AWD is not required, the system automatically disconnects the front axle to maximize fuel economy while still providing the outstanding fun-to-drive performance and handling inherent in rear-wheel-drive vehicles. On the road, the V8 is a fast, smooth cruiser with all the power you could want. The 300’s suspension and road holding are very good. The big sedan soaks up all road surfaces admirably and superior sound insulation makes for a quiet and extremely comfortable ride. No real vices to speak of.
Passengers, both front and rear praised the big roomy cabin, legroom, comfortable seats and high-end ambience. A superb looking and all round performer. Highly recommended. Long may the big sedan reign!
