Suspect arrested in Langara incident

A man in his 20s has been arrested in relation to an incident at Langara College on Monday.

Just before noon, first responders received reports of a suspicious fire on campus. After speaking with witnesses, officers determined that a suspect had allegedly entered the college with incendiary devices. It appears the suspect may have lit one or more fires before fleeing from the scene.

An integrated response between the Vancouver Police, Vancouver Fire Rescue Service, BC Ambulance, and staff at Langara College led to the school being safely evacuated. There were no reported injuries.

The VPD’s Emergency Response Section responded to systematically search the campus for additional hazards and found a number of suspicious devices over the course of the afternoon. Their search is expected to continue into the night.

After officers arrived on scene, the suspect was quickly identified and VPD investigators took steps to locate him. He was arrested in Surrey by Metro Vancouver Transit Police just after 4 p.m. The suspect has been turned over to the VPD and is in custody.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact the VPD’s Major Crime Section at 604-717-2541 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
