Suspect arrested and charged with attempted murder in New Westminster shooting

ON November 17, at approximately 7:30 p.m., members of the New Westminster Police Department responded to a report of shots fired in the 200-block of Osborne Avenue. The suspect fled before police arrival. One adult female was transported to hospital with injuries.

New Westminster Police Major Crime and Street Crime detectives conducted an extensive investigation and were able to identify and locate a suspect. With the assistance of the Vancouver Police Department Emergency Response Team, 24-year-old Carlos Monteith was arrested and charged with several offences.

“NWPD Investigators worked around the clock through the weekend, and because of their commitment to public safety they were able to identify and arrest the suspect to bring him before the courts,” said acting Chief Constable Dave Jansen. “I am very proud of the dedication of our officers and of the teamwork with our partners at the Vancouver Police.”

Monteith has been charged with:

  1. Attempt murder with a firearm;
  2. Discharge a firearm with intent to wound;
  3. Possess a prohibited / restricted firearm with ammunition; and,
  4. Possessing a firearm while prohibited.

“A shooting in any community is disturbing, and we hope that the public is put at ease knowing that we invest significant resources into solving and preventing these types of offences,” said Sgt. Jeff Scott. “Mr. Monteith remains in-custody until his next court appearance on December 2, 2019.”
