RAPID transit, bus service, the Pattullo Bridge replacement, and improving the movement of people and goods in Surrey will be among the topics discussed at a telephone town hall on transportation being hosted by Councillor Barinder Rasode.

“Residents tell me all the time they’re fed up with inadequate transit service and more needs to be done to solve the transportation issues in Surrey,” says Rasode, who sits on the City of Surrey’s Transportation Committee.  “People are stuck in their cars and unable to rely on transit to get around our city, and that’s not acceptable.  And, the situation will only worsen as more families move to Surrey.”

She adds the issues are top of mind right now as summer vacation comes to an end and commuters head back to work, students start university classes, and youth extra-curricular activities kick into high gear.

“Families are spending hours a day getting to and from work, as well as driving their kids to hockey practice and dance lessons.  Our residents deserve better and I believe that creating a reliable and safe urban transportation system is vital to the social and economic success of our city,” says Rasode.

Peter Holt, a local transportation advisor and former CEO of the Surrey Board of Trade, will join the discussion to offer his unique perspective on the situation.

Over the next 25 years, the population of Surrey is expected to grow by 50 per cent, to approximately 750,000 people.  Rasode says the city needs to prepare for this growth by improving roads and intersections, as well as delivering the rapid transit Surrey deserves.

She says she will be providing callers with an update on some of the key transportation projects in the city to answer questions, listen to concerns, and gather feedback.
