Lengthy standoff in New Westminster results in safe arrest of suspect

ON Monday (September 18), at approximately 5 a.m., New Westminster Police were called to a residence in Queensborough for a male uttering threats. Upon arrival the suspect barricaded himself in the home and refused to come out. It was believed the male was armed with a weapon, and what ensued was a lengthy standoff with police.

“Patrol officers at the initial stage made numerous attempts to communicate with this individual,” said Sgt. Jeff Scott, “From phone calls to loud speakers, we tried different ways to reach out to ensure his safety.”

Approximately seven hours later, the suspect exited the residence and was arrested without incident. Charges are pending and the male is due to appear in court on Tuesday.

The Lower Mainland Emergency Response Team assisted New Westminster Police. The investigation is ongoing.
