South Asian police officer in Ontario’s Peel Regional Police facing criminal charges

A 19-year veteran of the Peel Regional Police was arrested and charged with three counts of assault and one count of assault with a weapon following a seven-month-long investigation by the Peel Regional Police Professional Standards Bureau.
Peel Regional Police learned of the allegations in March 2018 and immediately began an internal investigation into the officer’s conduct. Sgt. Badal Kaushal was suspended with pay as per the provisions of the Police Services Act.
On November 16, Kaushal was arrested and charged with two counts of assault and one count of assault with a weapon in relation to an on-duty incident that occurred on May 21, 2017, in the City of Brampton. The victims, a 44-year-old female and a 33-year-old female, sustained minor injuries.
Kaushal was further charged with one count of assault in relation to an on-duty incident that occurred on July 23, 2017. The victim, a 53-year-old male, sustained minor injuries.
Kaushal was released on a promise to appear and undertaking with a scheduled court date of Monday, December 17 at the Ontario Court of Justice in Brampton.
Peel Regional Police Chief Jennifer Evans said she is committed to ensuring transparency and maintaining the public’s confidence and trust when dealing with allegations of police officer misconduct.
“Our officers are held to a high standard in order to maintain the trust that we have worked so hard to build within our community. Upon learning of the allegations, I immediately ordered an internal investigation into the conduct and actions of the involved officer.” said Evans.
