Personal jewelry robberies prompt safety reminder

Surrey RCMP would like to remind the public about some basic crime prevention tips after a string of personal jewelry robberies in the Newton area over the past week.

Simple steps like remaining vigilant and trusting your instincts will help reduce the risk of being an easy target. Residents are advised to use their discretion when wearing expensive jewelry in public and to call police immediately in the event your jewelry is stolen.

These incidents have all occurred in the afternoon hours in various parts of Newton and involve a suspect forcibly taking jewelry in plain view from victims and fleeing the area. The suspect is described as a Caucasian male, in his 40’s, with a slim build, white hair, wearing a blue jeans and green shirt, and associated to a dark blue-green coloured older model minivan.

Surrey RCMP is actively investigating these incidents. Anyone with further information is asked to contact the Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS if they wish to remain anonymous.
