NDP house leader John Horgan has introduced an amendment for the government to appoint an independent mediator, rather than legislating teachers back to work in the Bill 22 legislation. The government was hoping to pass the law by Thursday, before the teachers next scheduled strike vote, and before the house closes for spring break.
“I say this is not an obstacle. It’s an opportunity. The government has an opportunity to get a third party mediator. There are experienced people in British Columbia that are adept at resolving labour impasses,” he said.
B.C Education Minister George Abbott has already indicated he will appoint a mediator, but only within the government’s net zero mandate, and he still expects the legislation to be passed by Thursday of next week. BCTF head, Sue Lambert said the teachers have scheduled their next strike vote for their annual general meeting at the end of next week.
