Diabetes Prevention and Treatment will be held on Sunday, September 15, 2013 from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm at Bonsor Recreation Complex (6550 Bonsor Avenue, Burnaby). An opening ceremony is scheduled at 12:30 pm. The event is free of charge.

This one-day event is co-organized by Chinese Canadian Medical Society (BC) (CCMSBC), Chinese Canadian Dental Society of British Columbia, S.U.C.C.E.S.S. and InterCultural Online Health Network (iCON), UBC Faculty of Medicine eHealth Strategy Office.

“This year marks the 22nd anniversary of the event,” said Janet Tsoi, Co-Chair of Health Fair 2013 and Vice Chair of S.U.C.C.E.S.S. “We highly appreciate the long-term partnership with CCMSBC over these years,” Janet continued. “Our objective is to encourage the public to become more health conscious, to learn more about disease prevention and to live healthy lifestyle.”

Health Fair was first held in 1991. This annual event has offered more than 300 health workshops to over 30,000 participants in Metro Vancouver. It has become one of the most popular health events among the Chinese community in BC. Last year the event attracted over 1000 participants and it is expected that the attendance would be even higher this year.

Dr. Elinda Ho, Co-Chair of Health Fair 2013, stated, “We have noticed that the number of people with diabetes is growing and the expense of medical insurance is increasing accordingly. We have invited a number of specialists to offer lectures and forum to address these health issues. There will be 6 lectures, 3 in Cantonese and 3 in Mandarin respectively. The iCON forum features Prevention and Management of Diabetes: From Lifestyle to Technology Enabled Strategies. It will be presented in Cantonese with simultaneous interpretation to Mandarin.”

Participants are welcome to visit free health screening stations, including blood pressure, BMI, and dental screening. In addition, over 30 booths will provide health brochures in Chinese and English.
