Moga-Two-time former MLA and senior SAD leader Malkit Singh Keetu was allegedly shot dead by his three nephews and two others over a property dispute at his house in Bilaspur village of Moga district on Monday morning.
SSP Surjit Singh Grewal said the 67-year old Akali leader died on his way to a private hospital at Badhni Kalan. At least five bullets were fired at Keetu from a close range out of which three hit him. Two bullets fired from .315 bore rifle hit his chest while another passed through his thigh, resulting in a heavy blood loss. Keetu’s family members said he had just come out after taking a bath when the incident took place.
“He had a towel wrapped around his body when his nephews reached there and entered into a heated altercation with him before firing gunshots,” they said. Keetu’s gunmen reportedly fired at the assailants but they managed to flee. The former MLA was rushed to a private hospital at Badhni Kalan in a critical condition where he was declared brought dead.
The post-mortem was held at the district hospital in Moga. Later, the body was handed over to the family for cremation, which was attended by hundreds of Keetu’s supporters and many political leaders. A guard of honour was also given to the departed leader by a police picket.
The police had booked Keetu’s three nephews – Jaspreet Singh, Harpreet Singh and Gurpreet Singh – and two others, including Kulwant Singh and Angrej Singh, on charges of murder.
Mourning the untimely death of Keetu, CM Parkash Singh Badal said: “Keetu was as a disciplined soldier of the party and a votary of the downtrodden”. Deputy CM Sukhbir Singh Badal recalled Keetu’s commitment and his selfless service.
