BC Liberals introduce bill to end corporate and union influence in political parties

Peter Milobar

PETER Milobar, BC Liberal MLA for Kamloops-North Thompson, introduced the Election Amendment Act in the Legislature on Wednesday.

“If passed, this bill will ensure entities that are banned from donating money to political parties will not have influence through guaranteed positions of power,” said Milobar. “British Columbians asked for big money to be taken out of politics, and that should include appointed committees and boards as well.”

The Election Amendment Act prevents corporate or union entities from being given guaranteed positions on political party executives or policy-making committees that receive the taxpayer funded per-vote subsidy or election reimbursement funds.

“We want to continue to ensure that there is no perceived influence from corporate and union entities on our political system,” said Milobar. “By introducing this legislation, we are making sure that groups that are banned from making donations to political parties won’t be able to influence politics in other ways.”
