BC Debate Team Wins 2nd Prize in International Debate in Czech Republic

Debate team consisting of students from Vancouver, Burnaby and Coquitlam returned home from Olomouc, Czech Republic, where they won 2nd place in the Heart of Europe Debate tournament on August 2nd, 2012.

Heart of Europe Debating Tournament (HOEDT) is a WSDC (World Schools Debating Championships) based tournament founded in 2004. Originally a competition for high school students of European countries, it has now became a truly global competition for high school with teams from Canada, US, Singapore, Israel, Great Britain, Czech Republic, Romania, South Africa, South Korea, Chili, Nigeria, Slovenia, Sweden, etc.

Team Canada led by coach, Frankie Cena, included Jamal Dumas, Sonam Rai and Dena Tabyanian. They were the underdog going into the elimination rounds but under the leadership and mentoring of Frankie Cena were able to rise to the challenge and advanced through several elimination rounds to face off against the team from Singapore for the finals. The final round was close with Team Canada securing 2nd place.

Speaking of the tense elimination rounds and the competition, Frankie Cena said “Tonight was one of the most exciting, proud, intense, scary, and wonderful moments of my debate coaching.”
