All patients and staff safe following fire at Scarborough and Rouge Hospital’s Centenary site

SCARBOROUGH: All patients and staff are safe and accounted for following a fire at Scarborough and Rouge Hospital’s Centenary site Wednesday morning.

The fire occurred on a clinical unit on the 3rd floor of the Margaret Birch Wing (MBW). This floor was evacuated, as well as the 2nd and 4th floors as part of the hospital’s emergency protocol.

Toronto Fire Services has given an all clear, and staff, patients, and families have been allowed to return to all areas except for the 3rd floor MBW, which has been closed. Damages to the 3rd floor where the fire occurred are currently being assessed.

Patients from the 3rd floor MBW were initially moved to a safe holding area where they could continue to be well cared for. These patients will now be relocated to other areas of the hospital. Hospital staff are contacting affected patients’ families and emergency contacts.

The Centenary site Emergency department remains open. However, avoid visiting with any non-urgent needs at this time.
