Good news as the Honda Civic hatchback returns for the 2017 model year. And, it been worth wait as the new 2017 Civic Hatchback arrives with a bang. Derived from the oh so slippery shaped new 2016 Civic sedan and coupe, the new hatchback eschews a square, upright back door for a swoopy rear design that still offers a class-leading 728 litres of cargo space, even with the seats down. There is only one engine for now, namely a 1.5-liter direct-injected turbocharged inline-four, but output varies depending on whether the CVT or 6-speed manual transmission option is selected. With the base LX, 174 horsepower and 167 torque is on tap. For the Sport and Sport Touring versions, it gets bumped up to 180 hp and 177 lb.-ft. of torque. The torque figures for the CVT equipped model are less at 162 lb.-ft. Prices range from $21,390 (LX 6 speed manual transmission to $29,390 (Sport Touring). The Sport Touring offers such items as a 540-watt/12-speaker system plus heated rear seats and weights in at $27,490 The Sport Touring is priced at $29,390, and that includes exclusive items such as full LED headlights and the sweet 18 inch alloy wheels and duel center pipes for the go- faster looks.
Interior wise, the Civic hatchback is very much like the Civic sedan, with firm comfortable seats and a fairly roomy interior for a compact car. As usual with all Honda’s- the materials, fit and feel of the cabin is top-notch. The Civic is immense fun to drive with its fast acceleration, tight handling and entertaining tossability. Fuel economy is rated at 7.7/6.0/6.9 City/Hwy/Combined for the CVT and 8.0/6.2/7.2 for the six-speed manual equipped model
To sum up, the 2017 Honda Civic Hatchback is a really great car for fun loving drivers, yet offers superb family versatility and cargo capacity. It also arrives with a much higher level of features and equipment – some found on expensive cars way out of its segment. Granted, it is pricier than the Civic sedan and is a premium offering, but then again with features such as Honda Safety Sensing suite and the levels of quality, I think the price is fairly justified. Highly recommended.
