2015 Infiniti Q50: Superb Driving Dynamics in this Sporting sedan

Infiniti-Q70L-2015The 2015 Infiniti Q50 is a mid-sized premium luxury sports sedan that offers many fine attributes. It is a muscular, athletic looking car with tight sculpted sides and the signature “double arch” grille flanked by Infiniti’s “cat’s eye” LED headlights. Like its predecessor, from the Infiniti G-Sedan series it replaces – the Q50 has the same four –door coupe- like silhouette with the prominent nose, short rear deck, low roofline and wide planted stance.

Key highlights in the Q50 include a high fun to drive factor, excellent driving dynamics and an abundance of comfort, convenience and driver safety technology. The Q50 plays against formidable competition in this sector, such as the BMW 3 Series, Mercedes-Benz C Class, Lexus IS and Audi A4. However, the Infiniti has the performance and handling to give all of them a good run for the money.

The Q50 arrives in front-engine, all-wheel-drive or Rear Wheel Drive format. The Q50 is powered by a 3.7-litre DOHC V6 producing 328 hp and 269 lb/ft of torque. Transmission is a seven-speed auto with drive mode selector (Sport, Eco, Standard, Snow and ‘Personal’ modes).

Infiniti Q50 interiors are a highpoint and are easy on the eye when it comes to design and layout. Seats and cabins come in either a nice leatherette trim in the base models or trimmed with upmarket available leather and wood accent pieces. High quality fittings, soft-touch surfaces and aluminum accents also add to the ambience. Instruments and controls ergonomically positioned, and the Infiniti has both an eight-inch upper and seven-inch lower touchscreens. The cabin is roomy in all areas with ample legroom and decent enough rear headroom. Cargo capacity is 283 litres.

Other standard features include automatic headlights, heated side mirrors with integrated signals and reverse tilt-down, dual-zone climate control, tilt/telescopic leather-wrapped steering (with audio and cruise controls), rearview monitor, smartkey with pushbutton start, eight-way power for front seats, and six-speaker audio.

Our tester was the 2015 Infiniti Q50 with All Wheel Drive (Base priced at $$39,950) and included such niceties as leather trim, heated steering wheel, navigation, upgraded audio and Infiniti’s InTouch infotainment system that can be customized to owner preferences for such features as climate, audio, email, calendar and other settings. Also added was the hefty priced ($4,300) Deluxe Touring and Technology package. Total options and extras ($9,735) brought the final price of our tester to a total of $51,680 including $1,995 for destination and delivery.

On the road, the Q50’s sleek aerodynamic shape comes into its own with a Drag coefficient at a wind cheating 0.26 to 0.28. These numbers contribute to the tenacious grip, downforce and minimum front and rear ground lift. The 3.7-litre DOHC 24-valve V6 offers excellent acceleration with a thrilling sound from the throaty exhaust. The AWD performs very well with the four-wheel independent multi-link suspension allowing for stable, body- roll free cornering. The steering is also very responsive with only small inputs needed to ruffle the Q50 through any kind of terrain. Fuel economy for the AWD models comes in at 12.5/8.7/10.8L/100 km (city/hwy/combined.) In closing the Q50 AWD is a classy sporty luxury sedan that is fun to drive and offers a level of technology and refinement that is hard to beat. Highly recommended.
