Lecture on Palestine Issue The Centre for the Comparative Study of Muslim Societies and Cultures (SFU) and the World Literature Program (SFU) present "Palestinian Statelessness as the Crux of the Mideast Crisis," a lecture by Dr. Juan R.I. This lecture is free and open to the public. Delta Police Student Police Academy Applications being accepted until March 24. The Delta Police are currently in the process of selecting 20 Grade 11 and 12 Delta students to participate in the fourth annual Delta Police Department Student Police Academy. The program has been designed to expose students who are interested in a career in policing to the realities of police work and training. The week long syllabus is modeled after the training which is received by police recruits at the Justice Institute. They will learn about criminal and traffic laws and problem solving, receive physical training and instruction in use of force, advanced driving and firearms. They will participate in scenario based education that will simulate actual police calls for service. Their studies will commence on Monday, July 5 and conclude on Tuesday, July 13. Student Police Academy participants will graduate in front of their friends and families on July 13 and receive a certificate from Delta Police Chief Constable Jim Cessford. UVic's Centre On Aging needs your help: How do you choose the best Alzheimer’s medication? Do you switch to another type of medication if one is not working? If you are a caregiver, how do you assess the effectiveness of these medications? These types of questions and more are being asked by University of Victoria researchers in two unique studies: the Seniors’ Medication Study and the Caregiver Study. * The Seniors’ Medication Study is hoping to talk with over 300 patients and caregivers throughout the province about their experiences with Aricept, Reminyl and / or Exelon. The trial period continues until November, 2011. * The Caregiver Study is collecting the experiences of caregivers supporting friends and family members living with Alzheimer’s disease and how they perceive the impact of these medications. Researchers have interviewed over 400 caregivers throughout BC and hope to talk with another 1,000 caregivers before the end of November, 2010. PICS: Small Business Employee Training Program The ASPECT Small Business Employee Training Program has recently been launched as a pilot project throughout British Columbia. It is being delivered in Surrey, Delta, White Rock and Langley by Progressive Intercultural Community Services (PICS) Society. The funding for this program has been provided through the Canada – British Columbia Labour Market Agreement. This training Program is focused on helping small businesses to grow the potential of their lower skilled workers (known as “growth employees”) by providing them access to government funded training courses that are tailored to the needs of small businesses and their employee(s). This pilot project has space available for 1,000 “growth employees” across different regions in British Columbia that fit the eligibility requirement for this project. Each eligible “growth employee” will be provided with up to a maximum of $900 to be used towards training courses that are specific to the employees need. In addition, eligible “growth employees” will also receive up to 5 free online courses offered through the ASPECT Impact learning management system. Youth-Can, a free program in Surrey and Delta is now accepting referrals. If you are between the ages of 15-25 and have lived in Canada for five years or less, Youth-Can program staff will support and train you to help you reach your goals. You must be a permanent resident of Canada or awaiting permanent resident status. You will receive one-to-one support from trained youth workers, classroom training in job search, computers, leadership, life skills and more. We offer assistance in returning to school, college or trades training programs. Program for South Asian Mothers of Young Children Punjabi speaking women and their children, age 0-5 are invited to join a group that offers support, encouragement and information. The South Asian Family Empowerment program meets every Friday morning at the North Delta Family Resource Centre, 11838-88th Avenue, Delta. This program requires registration and a maximum of 10 families can take part in it each year. The children are in a separate area, which is set up like a preschool and are given the opportunity to learn through play. Both English and Punjabi are spoken during the groups, to start introducing the English language to participants.
