Punjabi Speech Competition for Students

Sunday, November 30, noon to 3 p.m. at Bombay Banquet Hall, 7475 - 135 Street, Surrey. Participating students will be divided into three levels according to their language ability: * Beginners:  Students who have just started learning Punjabi. * Advanced:  Those who have mastered basic reading and writing skills. * Fluent: Those who are fluent in Punjabi, regardless of whether they learned it in India, Canada or elsewhere. Participants must be 25 years or under and must be enrolled in school (not necessarily learning Punjabi) in Canada. Beginners will know the topic in advance (through their teachers) so they can prepare. Speech time is two to three minutes. Advanced speakers will also know the topic in advance (through their teachers) so they can prepare. Speech time is three to four minutes. Fluent speakers will not know the topic in advance. Speech time is three to four minutes. The students who come 1st and 2nd in each level will receive awards. All participating students will receive certificates. Light refreshments. Songs and music. A multifaith children’s program that introduces children aged 4-6 and their families to the people and practices of a variety of faith traditions in Surrey. Benefit Art Auction: Amnesty International

30 artists have produced original artwork in support of Amnesty International and the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. Each artwork illustrates or interprets an article from the Declaration, and all works will be auctioned live on Tuesday, December 9 at the Canvas Lounge, 99 Powell Street, Gastown. PICS Project

Progressive Intercultural Community Services Society plans on building a house for abandoned wives and single parents who are having difficulties in finding reasonable and affordable accommodation. In order to approach and convince authorities that this type of service is needed in the community, we need to hear from those would benefit from and need this type of service.

PICS Assisted Living, Surrey

PICS is recruiting volunteers to assist seniors in various activities such as story telling, sharing news and views, organizing indoor / indigenous games, gardening, book reading, and any other creative activity useful to promote health and wellness of the residents in compliance with the PICS and Fraser Health policies. Program for South Asian Mothers of Young Children

Punjabi speaking women and their children, age 0-5 are invited to join a group that offers support, encouragement and information. The South Asian Family Empowerment program meets every Friday morning at the North Delta Family Resource Centre, 11838-88th Avenue, Delta.  This program requires registration and a maximum of 10 families can take part in it each year. The children are in a separate area, which is set up like a preschool and are given the opportunity to learn through play. Both English and Punjabi are spoken during the groups, to start introducing the English language to participants. The women learn about health and fitness, child and personal development, and self care, as well as receiving education about the Canadian school system and learning cross cultural competence and interactions. North Delta Family Resource Centre is a program of the Boys and Girls Club Community Services of Delta Richmond, which offers many services to the communities of Delta, Richmond and Surrey. Mums-to-be Needed by UFV

If you’re a pregnant woman who will be having her baby in a Fraser Valley hospital between September and April, you’re in high demand by nursing students from the University of the Fraser Valley. Volunteer mums and their partners are urgently needed to help educate nursing students while receiving extra support during their pregnancy and labour. Women having their babies between September and April at Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Surrey Memorial, or Langley Memorial hospitals are eligible for this program. If you agree to participate, the student nurse will meet you (and your partner if applicable) for a “get to know you chat,” go with you on one visit to the doctor, go with you to one prenatal class, give you and your partner support during all of your labour and delivery, and visit you afterwards. Stopping the Violence Counselling

Stopping the Violence (STV) Counselling Program for Women is a specialized and unique program providing free and confidential individual and group counseling, support and advocacy to women experiencing emotional, physical, sexual, psychological, social and/or economic abuse.  If you are experiencing violence in your relationship, lonely and isolated, denied money, forced to stay with the person who hurts you, worried that your children are being exposed to violence and / or concerned about your sponsorship you need help.  If you sponsored your husband and he is abusing you, or has abandoned you and as a result you are now in default of the sponsorship undertaking – call and speak to the STV counsellor.  If you need information about the law and about your rights, information about custody, access and guardianship, help in dealing with your relationship and counseling support – contact the STV counsellor at 604-254-9626.  All services are free and confidential.  Punjabi and Hindi spoken.  Call MOSAIC Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

 

Free Job Mentoring Service

Job Mentoring Service (JMS) is an eight-week free program started by PICS for professional and skilled immigrants where each client is paired with one mentor from the related field to enable them to get exposure in their chosen fields. The clients learn about the local businesses and industries, and develop a professional network to get job leads and referrals to secure employment. The list of fields in which PICS arranges mentors includes (but is not limited to): Accounting, Architecture, Banking, Engineering, Financial Management / Financial Investment, Information Technology, Journalism, Law, Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, Radiology, Teaching, and Trades.
