ALL GURDWARAS UNITE TO OBSERVE 25TH ANNIVERSARY OF INDIAN ARMY ATTACK ON GOLDEN TEMPLE AND HIGHLIGHT HUMAN RIGHTS ISSUES

In a historic first, all the major gurdwaras in the Lower Mainland are coming together this Saturday (June 6) from 6 to 9 p.m. at Vancouver Art Gallery in downtown Vancouver to observe the 25th anniversary of the Indian Army attack on the Golden Temple in Amritsar and highlight human rights issues in India. ARMY OPEN TO REVIEWING POLICY THAT EXCLUDES SIKHS




NEW YORK: In a significant development in the Sikh Coalition’s campaign to end the exclusion of Sikhs from the U.S. military, the army has written to the organization stating that "senior leadership" is aware of Sikh community concerns. The letter also acknowledges "the importance of reviewing the rationale behind our current policies when circumstances warrant." [Full Story]

CALIFORNIA KIRPAN EDUCATION BILL PASSES UNANIMOUSLY

SACRAMENTO, California: The entire California State Assembly has passed a proposed law that would train law enforcement personnel about Sikhs and kirpans. The bill now goes on for a vote by the California State Senate, and then to the Governor’s desk to hopefully be signed into law. The Assembly vote passed 59-0 with nobody opposing the legislation. Extensive lobbying efforts led by the Sikh Coalition and local sangat members resulted in bipartisan support of this legislation. [Full Story]

SIKH STUDENT FILES LAWSUIT AGAINST NYC DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION




NEW YORK: One year to the day after he suffered a violent biased-based attack, Jagmohan Singh Premi filed a federal lawsuit alleging that the city's Department of Education (DOE) failed in its duty to protect him from such attacks in school. The suit alleges that Premi was subject to nearly daily abuse from a fellow student and that the school system did not respond effectively to protect Mr. Premi.
