Mela Gadri Babian Da

The 13th Annual Mela Gadri Babian Da at Bear Creek Park, Surrey, on Sunday, August 3, noon to 8 p.m. This year’s Mela is dedicated to the Komagata Maru tragedy. Shri Hanuman Maha Yagna

A nine-day Hanuman Maha Yagna is being held at Shree Mahalakshmi Temple, 467 E 11th Avenue, Vancouver, until Sunday, August 3, starting with the traditional Dhwajarohana ceremony. Daily prayers will begin with Ganesha puja at 6 p.m. followed by Shri Hanuman Maha Mantra Yagna, recitation of Hanuman Chalisa and a discourse highlighting the importance of the worship of Sri Hanuman, especially with relevance to the present day state of living, and a word by word explanation of the significance of recitation of Sankata Mochana Hanuman Ashtaka. Surrey: Blood Donor Clinics

Canadian Blood Services forecasts a need for about 13,000 British Columbians to make a blood donation from now through the end of August to meet hospital patient demand. Across the country, more than 100,000 people will be needed to meet patient demand. Heading into the BC Day long weekend and into the next few weeks, projections suggest that Canadian Blood Services will be issuing more blood to hospitals than it collects. Richmond: Beijing Olympics Celebration

The Richmond Spirit of BC Committee and Aberdeen Centre supported by a number of community partners will host a major celebration to mark the opening of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Summer Games on Friday, August 8 at Aberdeen Centre. The event kicks off with a pancake breakfast at 5 a.m. with a stage show from 6:30 to 10 a.m. featuring live entertainment, sports demonstrations, draw prizes, displays, broadcasts of the Opening Ceremonies on a giant screen and much more.



Vancouver’s 2008 Olympic Celebration

City of Vancouver and the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC) will host a free 2008 Olympic and Paralympic Games Celebration alongside the 9th Annual Vancouver Chinatown Festival in downtown Vancouver. The celebration will feature: a giant outdoor screen showing coverage from the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games, live athlete interviews, sport demonstrations and musical entertainment. Top Canadian athletes will be available for autograph signings, while 2010 Legacies Now and Sportfit will provide the festival goers the opportunity to experience Olympic and Paralympic sports through demonstrations and the chance to try out some sports themselves. The two-day celebration event will feature live musical entertainment from around the world, including the Big Bang Big Band, Kutapira Marimba Band, Orquesta Goma Dura, Lache Cercel Roma Swing Ensemble and Johnny Montuno. The celebration kicks off on the main stage in Chinatown on August 9 at 2 p.m. Events will take place between 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. on August 9, and from 12 noon to 6 p.m. on August 10. Mums-to-be Needed by UFV

If you’re a pregnant woman who will be having her baby in a Fraser Valley hospital between September and April, you’re in high demand by nursing students from the University of the Fraser Valley. Volunteer mums and their partners are urgently needed to help educate nursing students while receiving extra support during their pregnancy and labour. Women having their babies between September and April at Abbotsford, Chilliwack, Surrey Memorial, or Langley Memorial hospitals are eligible for this program. If you agree to participate, the student nurse will meet you (and your partner if applicable) for a “get to know you chat,” go with you on one visit to the doctor, go with you to one prenatal class, give you and your partner support during all of your labour and delivery, and visit you afterwards. Free Job Mentoring Service

Job Mentoring Service (JMS) is an eight-week free program started by PICS for professional and skilled immigrants where each client is paired with one mentor from the related field to enable them to get exposure in their chosen fields. The clients learn about the local businesses and industries, and develop a professional network to get job leads and referrals to secure employment. Stopping the Violence (STV) Counselling Program for Women is a specialized and unique program providing free and confidential individual and group counseling, support and advocacy to women experiencing emotional, physical, sexual, psychological, social and/or economic abuse. If you are experiencing violence in your relationship, lonely and isolated, denied money, forced to stay with the person who hurts you, worried that your children are being exposed to violence and / or concerned about your sponsorship you need help. If you sponsored your husband and he is abusing you, or has abandoned you and as a result you are now in default of the sponsorship undertaking – call and speak to the STV counsellor. All three watersheds are closed to the public as a primary means of safeguarding our water supply. Girls' Program

The City of Surrey, Parks, Recreation, and Culture Department in partnership with the School District and The League of Ordinary People are implementing a new program targeted at girls ages 12-17. Clients will be assisted through two weeks' Job Finding Club, or through short-term Focused Job Search Workshops for resume preparation, interviewing skills, and learning how to use the Internet as a job search tool. Professional immigrants can join Job Mentoring Program to learn more about their chosen fields. There is no fee for the job search programs and clients get free access to the Internet, photocopier, fax machines, computers, printers, job leads and other useful resources. The multi-lingual counsellors at PICS Employment Programs provide job search assistance in English, Punjabi, Hindi, and Urdu language. PICS has helped thousands of clients in getting jobs through free job search programs and can help you too.
