The federal government awarded the city of Surrey with the prestigious title of “Cultural Capital for 2008.” To live up to this title, the city hosted a three-day Fusion Festival over the weekend at Holland Park. It was the largest ever three-day multicultural celebration here showcasing some 40 international pavilions of music, food and culture.

Anniversaries of Change is a Vancouver-based consortium of Asian-Canadian institutions and organizations marking 2007 as an anniversary year in the search for justice and a multicultural Canada. This organization has strong representation from the labour movement, and community groups and organizations from the South Asian, Chinese, Japanese, and Musqueam communities.

For over 90 residents of the Extended Care Unit at Delta Hospital, recreation time plays a very important part of their day-to-day activities. With so many of the hospital’s residents having an agricultural background, it is a dream of the ECU Manager, Annette Garm, to provide “a wheelchair accessible greenhouse where our residents can start vegetables and then eventually harvest them and enjoy the fresh produce for dinner!” Plus, they can actively participate in gardening activities year-round by having a functional greenhouse, which will aid with the grind of daily hospital life.

Jasvir Singh is the same athlete that the Khalsa Diwan Society New Westminster in conjunction with other organizations sponsored from India back in 2002 and since then, the champion weightlifter has won many gold medals in Canada and abroad and is now the first weightlifter from B.C. to go to the Olympics in over 20 years ago.

I'm pleased to say that the Healthy Eating for Seniors handbook in Chinese and Punjabi that we launched June 27, 2008 has been met with an overwhelmingly positive response. In just a few short weeks, all 10,000 Chinese copies and over half of the Punjabi copies have been distributed, are being well used and continue to prompt more requests.

In their haste, sometimes, new immigrants will take on jobs below their qualifications just so that the immediate financial stress can be alleviated.
