NINE OF 14 MEMBERS OF HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING TEAM FOR JAPAN WERE INDO-CANADIANS

Sucha Singh, the outstanding international-level coach of Abbotsford's Miri Piri Wrestling Club who also coaches the Abbotsford's Rick Hansen secondary school team, recently led a 14-member team from B.C. high schools to participate in four goodwill tournaments in Japan.

Chanmit Phulka, a grade 11 student at Abbotsford’s Rick Hansen secondary who trains at Miri Piri Club, proved unbeatable as he won in all four tournaments in his 96 kg category.

His younger brother, Jasmit Phulka, who is a grade 9 student at Rick Hansen and also trains at Miri Piri, won in two tournaments in his 66 kg category.

Gurdeep Beesla (115 kg), a grade 12 student of Vancouver College, also proved to be unbeatable in all four tournaments in his heavyweight category.

Balwinder Sahota, also of Khalsa Club, won in three tournaments in the 69 kg category.

Another Khalsa Club member, Parmvir Dhesi, won in one tournament in the 84 kg category.

Four of the remaining students were all from Hargobind Club: Karnbir Johal (66 kg), Karan Singh Sanghera (74 kg), Arjan Gill (84 kg) and Parveer Takhar (60 kg).
