#1. DAVID BASI IN ANOTHER ALLEGED BRIBERY CASE
Vancouver Island developers Anthony Ralph (Tony) Young, 76, and James Seymour (Jim) Duncan, 64, have been ordered to stand trial on three counts each of fraud and one count each of breach of trust over allegations they paid $50,000 to David Basi, who was ministerial assistant to then finance minister Gary Collins, in connection with an application to remove property from the B.C. agricultural land reserve.
Justice Ernie Quantz ordered the trial after preliminary hearings in Victoria. The evidence is under a publication ban.
The Shambrook Hills Development Corp., now known as the Sunriver Estates, developed a residential subdivision near Sooke, west of Victoria.
Basi has yet to go through a preliminary hearing.
#2. TEEN SHOT IN THE HIP AT SURREY HOUSE PARTY
In the early morning hours of June 29, RCMP in Surrey were called to a residence in the area of the 61st Avenue and 127th Street where a teen had been shot in the hip.
Surrey Sgt. Roger Morrow said: “It appears as though a house party began around 9 p.m. on June 28 with a small group of people. These numbers then swelled to between 30 and 50 by 1:45 a.m. when police were called.”
He said that although the investigation was still ongoing, “witnesses advise that two South Asian and two Asian males attended the party and a dispute erupted ending with a large number of people out on the street. A series of shots were heard with one round striking a 15-year-old girl in her hip. Fortunately this was a non-life threatening injury for which she was treated in hospital.
”A small dark colored import car was seen fleeing the area at the time of the shots being fired.”
Anyone with information about this incideny should call Surrey RCMP at 604-599-0502 or Greater Vancouver Crimestoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
#3. MURDER VICTIM SALIM KHAKI WAS KNOWN TO POLICE
Last weekend, RCMP announced that the man whose body was found in the rural area of Merritt on June 25 was Salim Khaki, 40, of the Lower Mainland. He was known to police. Police said foul play was involved in his death.
A police spokesperson said: “The autopsy was done (Thursday) in Kamloops and Khaki's family was notified (Thursday) night. The South-East District Major Crime Unit with the assistance of the E Division Serious Crimes Unit are continuing their investigation. They are urging anyone who was traveling the Coquihalla Connector around 3 a.m. on June 25 and may have noticed anything suspicious in the area or have information that might assist with the investigation to contact their local police department or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.”
On June 25, at about 3:30 a.m., a truck driver reported a body on the side of the road at the Elkhart Road exit off Hwy 97C (Okanagan Connector), approximately halfway between Merritt and Westbank. This is primarily a fishing and logging rural area.
A local newspaper reported that Khaki, an Ismaili, was a convicted drug dealer who studied at SFU for three years. He also worked as a mortgage broker and coached a men’s hockey team.
In 1998, Khaki was sentenced to six years for conspiracy to possess cocaine by an American court.
In 2002, he was arrested for trafficking cocaine and carrying a restricted weapon without a licence, but the charges were later stayed.
In 2005, Khaki was charged with possessing cocaine for the purpose of trafficking and possessing ephedrine. He was convicted of trafficking and received a one-year conditional sentence.
