#1. TOM GILL APPEALS FOR CHEF FOR INDIAN FOOD AT SURREY EVENT
Surrey Councillor Tom Gill on Thursday issued an appeal for a chef for Indian food for a food-tasting event called “Flavours of Surrey” that is being held on July 27 from noon to 4 p.m. at the Historic Stewart Farm.
He said that the Agricultural Advisory Committee at Surrey City Hall was in the process of confirming chefs for the evnt that will have live entertainment.
Gill said: “To attract restaurateurs, they have offered to cover the cost of the ingredients for the food items, and then include their business name in the advertising and marketing. We have a good array of menu items; however, we have not had any luck with securing a chef for Indian food.
“Initially we had an interested party, but now they have indicated they are too busy at this time, which has left us in a difficult situation. Do you happen to know any Indian restaurant owners or chefs that may be interested in participating? It would be really nice to have a diverse representation in the menu offering and a shame to not have the Indian culture represented at this major community event.”
Indeed, with 27.5 per cent of Surrey’s population consisting of Indo-Canadians it would be such a disgrace if no chef for Indian food came forward.

#2. NEW DEMOCRATS VOW TO KEEP FIGHTING THE GAS TAX
The day after Gordon Campbell’s new fuel tax drove Surrey gas prices to more than $1.52 per litre, Surrey-Panorama Ridge MLA Jagrup Brar vowed at a rally this week that the New Democrats will keep fighting the tax.
“We’ve taken the Axe the Gas Tax campaign to the streets of Surrey today to bring attention to how the fuel tax is impacting Surrey families and small businesses whose budgets are already stretched,” said Brar. “People are upset that the fuel tax lets large polluters off the hook, while working families pay the price.”
The rally, which was held at the corner of 64th Avenue and King George Highway, attracted tremendous support from commuters who passed by and honked in opposition to Campbell’s fuel tax.
Brar said the NDP’s Axe The Gas Tax Campaign has garnered large support in the Surrey community where residents are struggling with record high gas prices and Campbell’s failure to provide expanded transit options.
“If the Premier was serious about climate change, he would expand transit and roll back fares, and provide families with more options to reduce their emissions,” said Brar. “This additional tax is only going to make things worse for Surrey residents.”
NDP Leader Carole James and the New Democrats will continue to take their Axe the Gas Tax campaign around the province in the coming days. The online petition is at www.AxeTheGasTax.ca
