Guru Nanak's Free Kitchen

Register to volunteer at www.gurunanaksfreekitchen.com. The Lower Mainland's Sikh Community is proud to collectively organize the "Guru Nanak's Free Kitchen for the Homeless" on March 7 and 8 (first Friday and Saturday of each month). A langar will be set up at the Life Skills Centre (412 East Cordova Street) in the Downtown Eastside where homeless and needy individuals can drop by any time of the day and as many times as they want to feed their hunger. Gurdwara Dukh Niwaran Sahib, Surrey, and Canadian Singh Sabha Gurdwara, Surrey, will be providing the langar this month. Blankets, socks, and jackets are also being collected at the gurdwaras. No particular organization is heading this project. It is a collective effort by the entire Sikh community

Arthritis Self-Management Program

The Arthritis Society is offering the Arthritis Self-Management Program in Surrey. The program provides people with the knowledge and skills to help them better manage their arthritis and fibromyalgia. Student Police Academy

Delta Police are currently accepting applications from Grades 11 and 12 Delta students to participate in the third annual Delta Police Department Student Police Academy. This seven-day program, which runs July 2-10, simulates training received by police recruits at the Justice Institute. This is a unique opportunity for students to learn about a career in law enforcement through this challenging learning experience Application deadline is Friday, March 14. Lawyers Rights Watch Canada (LRWC)

India Club's Annual AAA/SAA Awards

World of Smiles Telethon

BC Children's Hospital Foundation and Shaw Cablesystems G.P. join together on Sunday, March 16 for a very special fundraising event benefiting BC Children's Hospital, Sunny Hill Health Centre for Children and the Child & Family Research Institute. The 10th anniversary "A World of Smiles" Telethon airs live from 5 to 11 p.m. on Shaw Multicultural Channel, Cable 109. This year's telethon will be simulcast on Shaw TV, Cable 4, in the communities served by Shaw's Vancouver and Nanaimo systems. Atish Ram - producer of the television series Zindagi - will join Shaw Multicultural Channel host Sukhi Ghuman for the six-hour broadcast, with special guest appearances by local media personalities Nira Arora and Renu Bakshi, and Montreal comedian Sugar Sammy. Multi-cultural communities are invited to join Asian Pulse TV and Trinjan Society to commemorate "The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination" which is observed annually on March 21 to collectively work towards the elimination of all forms of racism. BC Sikhs Out There

The next "BC Sikhs Out There" charity walk / run event will be the Supercities Walk for MS. The walk raises funds for the MS (Multiple Sclerosis) Society of Canada on Sunday, April 27 in Surrey, BC. The "Sikh Community of British Columbia" team had over 50 people participate in the Alzheimer Society of BC's Investor's Group "Walk for Memories" and raised $2900. Richmond: Immigrant Art Exhibit

Richmond is searching for artists who are new immigrants or refugees to Canada to share their work at the inaugural New Canadians Visual Art Exhibit. The exhibit will run from May 1 to 31 at the Richmond Cultural Centre, Upper Rotunda, at 7700 Minoru Gate, Richmond. Submission applications are being accepted until 5 p.m. on March 14. The entrants may be professional or non-professional artists. Stopping the Violence (STV) Counselling Program for Women is a specialized and unique program providing free and confidential individual and group counseling, support and advocacy to women experiencing emotional, physical, sexual, psychological, social and/or economic abuse. If you are experiencing violence in your relationship, lonely and isolated, denied money, forced to stay with the person who hurts you, worried that your children are being exposed to violence and / or concerned about your sponsorship you need help. If you sponsored your husband and he is abusing you, or has abandoned you and as a result you are now in default of the sponsorship undertaking - call and speak to the STV counsellor. Women Against Violence Against Women

And Rape Crisis Center strives to end violence in women's lives. WAVAW offers: 24-hour Crisis Line and referrals, Outreach and Public Education, One to One and Group Counselling, Accompaniments to hospital, police and courts, Crime Victim Assistance (Sexual Assault), Comprehensive Training for crisis line peer support volunteers, Aboriginal Outreach & Counselling. WAVAW has multicultural staff that are able to offer outreach to Ethno-Cultural Communities & Front Line Service Providers. Clients will be assisted through two weeks' Job Finding Club, or through short-term Focused Job Search Workshops for resume preparation, interviewing skills, and learning how to use the Internet as a job search tool. Professional immigrants can join Job Mentoring Program to learn more about their chosen fields. There is no fee for the job search programs and clients get free access to the Internet, photocopier, fax machines, computers, printers, job leads and other useful resources. The multi-lingual counsellors at PICS Employment Programs provide job search assistance in English, Punjabi, Hindi, and Urdu language. PICS has helped thousands of clients in getting jobs through free job search programs and can help you too.
