The common perception about gangs not seeping into innocent lives is a myth and is being exposed more openly, especially by Eileen Mohan who said to me: "There is a persona that gangs would never kill innocent people." That persona has been shattered with the death of her 22-year-old son, Chris, an innocent youth who was shot to death in a gang-related shooting October 19 in Surrey and shows once again the callous indifference for human life by gangs.

The recent dedication of the Surrey Memorial Hospital emergency room in the name of Guru Nanak demonstrates the contributions the Sikh community is making in British Columbia. As a Sikh, I am particularly proud of the efforts of my community to improve the lives of others. Thanks to charitable activities by Sikhs in B.C., since the start of the fall season, well over $1 million has been donated to various projects and countless hours have been devoted to community causes. The Appeal Court of Canada has reduced the 13-year sentence handed down to Amandeep Singh Randhawa of Surrey by the Surrey Provincial Court in the January 19 kidnapping of the 22-year-old daughter of the Indo-Canadian owner of a chain of furniture stores by two years because the justices said that it would "suffice to mark the seriousness of this crime and serve the important objectives of denunciation and deterrence." They called it "a clumsy case of a relatively short confinement."
