MOVIE REVIEW
SLEEPING BEAUTY
By ROBERT WALDMAN

Dreams do come true. That famous "truism" is the world-renowned trademark for Disneyland. Walt Disney wrote the book on family entertainment and the rightful heirs to his legacy continue the winning tradition with Enchanted, a wondrous bit of fun now unfolding at Tinseltown (on Pender, free parking), Oakridge Cinemas, the Esplanade Six, Empire Studio 12, Colossus and Famous Players Silver City cites around B.C.

Never tamper with a good thing. Here the brain trusts at Disney have come up with a smart and highly engaging retooling of the classic Cinderella story. Charming performances that are fun and lively make this film rock! Also, the filmmakers here smartly use a mix of full animation with live action to tell a story of a princess to be from a far off land who somehow winds up in American in a mess!

Unbeknownst to her, our saintly miss makes tracks to of all places New York. Visitors to the big apple know that the place can be rather intimidating so the royally dressed Giselle perfectly fits the classic fish out of water syndrome. Good Samaritans are few and far between so let's say our ancient miss is fortunate to come across busy Robert Phillip. Reluctant to help the poor girl Robert succumbs to his young daughter Morgan's insistence and soon this damsel in distress is taking this guy to the cleaners. Robert just won't buy her story of a prince coming to her rescue. Little does he know that she's telling the truth.

Sparks fly fast and often in this whimsical 107-minute romp that features terrific performances and just a wonderful story line with heroes, villains, wicked witches and the people of New York caught totally off guard by the chaos that ensues.

Handsome T.V. doctor Patrick Dempsey (Sweet Home Alabama) makes the perfect fall guy for Giselle's unbelievable and accidental romantic inclinations. Dempsey is wonderful at deadpanning and turns in a bravado performance. More accolades go to the woman who truly makes this film work. Consider likeable Amy Adams (Junebug) to be well on her way to stardom if not superstardom with her charming portrayal of a princess to be lost and in way over her head. Whether its singing or dancing Ms. Adams' energy here is non-stop and will appeal to every onlooker.

Friction aplenty develops in this tale with handsome James Marsden (Hairspray), in tights no less, simply riotous as Prince Edward who gives quips and barbs as good as he takes them. Fairy tales need lots of drive and gusto. Here the bad guys rise to the occasion as do the animal kingdom who eagerly chip and chirp in for the fun. British born Timothy Spall (Topsy Turvy) has loads of fun as an aide to royalty while Susan Sarandon (Thelma and Louise) gets to ham things up considerably as part of the extended family gathering.

Smart writing and effective direction from Kevin Lima (102 Dalmatians) who skillfully weaves a tale of fantasy and laces it with real issues that confront most citizens makes Enchanted is a joyous affair and a spectacle for all ages to behold.
