CKNW CONTROVERSY

BRUCE ALLEN MUST RETRACT HIS COMMENTS
BY HARRY BAINS, MLA for Surrey-Newton
I do not believe that Bruce Allen's comments reflect Canadian values. I feel he was misinformed and inaccurate in his commentary.

All Canadians are governed by the Constitution of Canada. In that constitution is the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. We change laws in this country to address the needs of today's society. If we didn't change laws to reflect the needs of our modern society our First Nations People, minorities and women would not have the right to vote.

As a country, Canada is built by immigration. With the exception of our First Nations People, we are all immigrants. We have made Canada our home. Home is a place where people feel safe and at ease. Many people from many different countries immigrate to Canada. With them they bring their culture, customs and religion. Canada is a tapestry of all countries.

The Vancouver Organizing Committee (VANOC) says the Olympic Games are the Canada Games. That everyone will be included in the Games. We will showcase our country to the world. There is not one visible minority person on the VANOC board today that has been appointed by the Provincial or Federal Government. How is this inclusive of all Canadians?

One of the latest appointees by VANOC is Bruce Allen. Bruce Allen was appointed to the committee to put together the ceremonies for the 2010 games. These ceremonies are to represent our country, our cultures and diversity to the world. After Mr. Allen's public comments, the communities that he offended feel he does not have the ability to showcase the diversity of our country.

Mr. Allen's comments have deeply offended thousands of Canadian minorities. This controversy goes against the Spirit of the Games. This controversy will continue to dog VANOC until Bruce Allen makes a full and unequivocal retraction of his comments.

It is also up Minister Colin Hansen to show leadership and bring these parties together to resolve to this divisive issue to the satisfaction of all.
