DRIVER SAYS HE WAS TAKEN BY SURPRISE, MORE COULD HAVE DIED

Bachittar Singh Brar, the 71-year-old driver of the pickup truck that plowed into the "Jaago" procession on August 24, was interviewed this week by Radio Sher-e-Punjab's news director Prof. Gurvinder Singh Dhaliwal, who provided this version to The VOICE:

Brar said that after dropping blueberries at an Abbotsford cannery around 11 p.m. he was driving down Lefeuvre Road - an undulating road - and suddenly saw so many people ahead of him and panicked. It was dark but his lights were on. The people were so close and he was going down the slope. He tried to brake but his vehicle had already plowed into the people.

He said that he came out of the truck. Many people were shrieking and crying. One person was very angry and said: "Beat him up." He told the person: "I'm already dead. If you want to, go ahead and kill me." Some people started pummeling him, but others came to his rescue and stopped the attackers. After that, they started helping all the injured people.

He said that his eyesight was absolutely fine and his speed was normal. It was only the surprise of suddenly seeing so many people right before his truck that caused the accident.

He claimed that there was a big truck behind him and that if his truck had not run into them first, there would have been many more deaths (because the bigger truck would have probably plowed into them).

He said that he was a baptized Sikh and didn't consume any alcohol or meat. Police had also said that he had taken no alcohol or drugs.

He said that he was not guilty but he was very sorry about what happened. His relatives went to the victims' houses to sympathize with them.
