MOVIE REVIEW
GROWING PAINS
By ROBERT WALDMAN

Adam Sandler - look out! Watch up and comer Seth Rogen lay claim to Hollywood king in Superbad, the latest comic gem from Columbia Pictures now causing comedic chaos at Scotiabank Theatre, Oakridge Cinemas, Empire Studio 12, Colossus and Famous Players Silver City cites around B.C.

Rare is it for an actor to have two hit movies out at the same time. Lightning does indeed strike twice for Vancouver native Rogen who re-teams with producer Judd Apatow to pull off a hilarious coming of age tale that will have teens and adults alike in stitches. Based on their own lives Superbad focuses on the high school "problems" that plagued Rogen and Evan Goldberg way back when

Graduation time can be trying for the most hardened souls and like so many before them Seth and Evan will do anything to "get lucky." Unlike past coming of age stories, which we've all seen before, in Superbad the boys speak exactly what's on their mind. Sexual obsession is the order of the day for both dudes: Seth plays the brash loudmouth while Evan is the more mild mannered, timid type. How strange it is for these two to be best friends but like the saying opposites attract goes these two are peas in the same pod.

Efforts to attend a graduation party open the doors for tons of laughs as this pair wind up in a hunt to bring liquor onto the premises. Aided and abetted by the nerdy Fogell these oddballs create havoc wherever they go. Further problems arise when the group runs afoul of the law in this truly ribald, riotous tale.

Smart casting featuring great actors playing the pair when young spark this story of sexual attraction, dysfunction and the awkwardness of getting laid. Frank explicit dialogue normally reserved for the school yard is front and center in this comedy that's full throttle fun.

Cast as the younger Seth is Jonah Hill (Click) who takes obnoxious behaviour to new heights (or lows), depending on your tastes while Michael Sera (Frequency) is the poster child for innocence as the virginal Evan. Newcomer Christopher Mintz-Plasse pulls off a memorable performance as the quirky Fogell, a nerd who goes to great lengths to find booze.

Adding more fuel to this comic fire are Seth Rogen (Knocked Up) and Bill Lader (You, Me and Dupree) who both slyly play two of L.A.'s finest upholders of the law. While Superbad may not appeal to the Masterpiece Theatre crowd there's no denying its universal appeal to teens and for those looking for an excellent, gut-splitting joke a minute expose that really does take folks back to their youth in hilarious fashion.
