POSITIVE NEWS AT AGM OF KHALSA DIWAN SOCIETY, NEW WESTMINSTER |
|
On Sunday, March 18, hundreds of members of the Khalsa Diwan Society New Westminster, packed the darbar hall to partake in the society's Annual General Meeting. The current executive of the Khalsa Diwan Society announced the financial report of 2006 as prepared by the society's accountant and then updated members on upcoming programs.
Harbhajan Singh Athwal, president of the society, opened the meeting and thanked the members for attending. He was followed by Bikramjit Singh, vice president, who read the financial report for the year 2006.
Once this report was read out to the sangat, members questioned the legal fees which amounted to $96,000 for the year 2006. Bikramjit Singh explained the number of cases prior to October 2006 and the new cases against the society from October 2006 to the present day. Members responded by demanding that members responsible for these cases against the Gurdwara Sahib be stripped off their memberships.
Members were pleasantly surprised that although the society paid $96,000 in legal expenses in 2006, it still managed to pay over $140,000 in back taxes and mortgage payments.
The highlights of the financial statements of the new executive since October 2006 were as follows:
* Paid off line of credit of $22,000.
* Paid $96,000 out of $142,000 in back dated property tax owed to the City of New Westminster.
* Paid $23,000 towards the mortgage.
Achievements since October 1, 2006, were also outlined by Bikramjit Singh in which the main highlights were the new screens in the darbar hall presenting the translation of the live Gurbani Kirtan and the improved renovated langar hall, library, and office, besides the house owned by the Gurdwara Sahib.
In addition to this, the Gurdwara website at www.sukhsagar.ca was started with live internet radio and Sukh Sagar radio on FM sideband as well as a quarterly Sukh Sagar Times publication. One of the main highlights of the last few months are the new Punjabi, Kirtan, Gatka, Homework Help, and Parents Discussion classes in which over 200 children are registered and the very successful celebrations of the 100 year anniversary of the Khalsa Diwan Society which included seminars, an international Gatka exhibition, essay competition, medical camp and Khalsa dastar and dress competition, besides the 100 years souvenir publication. Also, world renowned scholars were invited from all over the world.
The financial report was then approved by the members of the society and the meeting adjourned.
