Citizenship and Immigration Minister Monte Solberg, WHERE ARE YOU?
When the Conservative government was sworn into power on February 6, Prime Minister Stephen Harper chose Monte Solberg as Minister of Citizenship and Immigration. It was an unexpected appointment as Mr. Solberg represents a small urban constituency in southern Alberta and he had never been an active member of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Citizenship and Immigration. He had been the Opposition Finance critic since 2003.

A university chair and a memorial will be a befitting way to commemorate Komagata Maru incident
Prime Minister Stephen Harper deserves to be commended for the Komagata Maru commemoration initiative that he has launched - something the federal Liberals under Jean Chretien and Paul Martin failed to do.

Domestic abuse needs action, not talk
Over the last two weeks, I have heard lots of discussion in the media on the issue of domestic abuse in the Indo-Canadian community. All of the dialogue has been around cultural and other factors contributing to the domestic abuse. I believe the community is aware of what those factors are, such as expectations of women in a patriarchal society, gender inequality, extended family problems, wilful blindness to the faults of a family in order to immigrate to Canada, etc.

Supports are in place for women in crisis, says Ida Chong
I am disturbed to see - once again - the NDP using tragic circumstance for political gain as Claire Trevena does in her recent (The VOICE of November 11) letter to your paper. In falsely saying there's no support for women in crisis, Ms. Trevena is doing a tremendous disservice to the women in B.C. who need to know those supports are in place for them - and to the community organizations and associations who provide services throughout B.C.

BC Lions roar aloud at the CFL award ceremonies
The stars and the who's who of the Canadian Football League traded in their shoulder pads, helmets and clipboards to dawn suits and ties at the CFL Awards in Winnipeg. The big dance will be on Sunday when the Lions face the Alouettes but already Geroy Simon is doing the waltz.

Boil your water if there is any disolouration, health authorities caution
The GVRD Medical Health Officers are advising that the turbidity of the drinking water supplied to homes through the water distribution system has reached levels unprecedented in recent years. As turbidity increases, there is a potential for increased risk of gastro-intestinal illness.

Once again, B.C. Liberals fail to admit they have left mental health patients behind
There is much more to be done to ensure that people with mental illnesses can lead healthy and productive lives. As NDP critic for Mental Health, I am committed to working on behalf of British Columbians touched by mental illness to find solutions.

Division within NHLPA leading to more rancour
The division within the NHLPA is getting bigger and wider. Detroit Redwings star defenseman Chris Chelios is leading a charge of close to 120 plus players looking to oust Ted Saskin as the union's executive director and award them millions of dollars in damages. After Detroit's win last night in Vancouver, Chelios talked about how Saskin is still making executive decisions without consultation with the executive board:

Internships: a great way to learn and get your foot in the door
Q. I have a university degree, but I'm still working in the service sector at low wages because I can't find a job in my field. I thought it would be easy to find a job after graduation, but it seems everyone wants experience, even for entry-level positions. I don't want my schooling to go to waste, particularly because it will take forever to pay off my student debt at this rate. How can I get my foot in the door?
