Saintliness
By PRINCIPAL AMAR SINGH (Khalsa School Vancouver)

A sanctified life creates and allures sacrosanct virtues that make life fragrant, redolent and aromatic. One saintly life has the strength to send vibrations of virtuous fragrance through the whole village or city. They are the men of God who do not forget the Lord at any moment of life and their lives are saturated with the celestial virtues. Their living is truthful. Their words are imbued with verity. Guru Ram Das ji narrates this on page 319 of the G.G.S. : "Who with every breath and morsel of theirs forget not God's Name and within whose mind is this spell, they alone are the blessed and they alone are the perfect saints, 0 Nanak."

A person who remembers the Lord with every breath always thinks of good and does good in life. To him everyone is his. There is no stranger to him. He sees the light of the Lord in everyone. He perceives no enmity in anyone. His life becomes synonymous with service of humanity, compassion, piety, sanctity and Godliness.

Whatever goodness we find in this world is a legacy of saintliness that existed and spread its fragrance to the others. It is not bound by any garbs. It is an exalted way of living that dilates goodness, righteousness Rand excellence. Without saintliness in existence life tends to become chaotic. Tranquility and mental peace prevail where saintly virtues exist and are practised. The environment becomes sanctimonious where saintly people live.

Guru Nanak Devji narrates this on page 17 of the G.G.S.: "The man within whose heart is the light of Divine comprehension has saffron like auspicious body, gem like invaluable tongue and fragrance of eagle-wood like pure body breath. On his face he bears the sacred mark of having taken bath at seventy- eight places of pilgrimage. By that understanding he sings the praises of the True Name, the treasure of excellences."

They are the bestowers and eliminate the sufferings of others. They are in tune with the Lord at all times. He is a person who has won his mind. Guru Nanak Devji tells us this secret in the Japji Sahib on page 6 of the G.G.S.: "Victory over self is victory over the world."

Those who win their minds become an asset to the world. They dilate love and peace in this world. They have control over their desires and spread the same way of life to the others. They live in sanctity and bliss and teach the world to do the same with their own example. They win the world with love and affection. They rule the hearts of humanity with benevolence and kindness. They spread this luscious and savoury fragrance in the garden of life. Bhagat Kabir ji gives us a very good example of a sandal tree that spreads good fragrance all around it. On page 365 of the G.G.S. Bhagat Kabir ji says: "Those who live near the scandle-trees; they too become like sandal."

Just as a sandal tree spreads its fragrance, a saint dilates his own fragrance of virtues that make life beautiful and elegant. The whole garden of life becomes beautiful with colourful flowers.

There are people who are always overcome by desires and their own minds and they too try to win over the world by force. This force brings destruction and devastation. Hatred, enmity and abhorrence are spread by them. Instead of winning the world, they uproot humanity.

On the other hand, those who win their mind and desires have given life and support to the world. We may call them saints or angels; they bring heaven down to earth. The spirit and inspiration they give to the garden of humanity precipitate flowers of sweet fragrance and redolence that beautify life on this earth. They live in patience and contentment and do not reveal their level of proximity with the Lord. They pray for the welfare of everyone and live a life feeling the pulse of humanity.

Baba Faridji narrates this on page 1384 of the G.G.S.: "Men of patience abide in patience. The wise men burn their body's ego. They come near the Lord, but disclose not their secret to anyone."

They have the endurance of trees and they live miles away from greed, pride, anger, slandering, backbiting, consumption of intoxicants and falsehood. Their lives are pure, chaste, undefiled and virtuous. Guru Nanak Devji reveals a genuine truth of life on page 140 of the G.G.S.: "If clothes be stained with blood, the garments get polluted. Who suck the blood of human beings, how can their minds be pure?"
