DIWALI SPECIAL

Newton Elementary's Gateway to India
By HARPREET DHILLON, JASPREET DHILLON & NAVI SIDHU
On October 17, Newton Elementary had a successful Diwali celebration called "Gateway To India." This program was put together by Newton Elementary's Multicultural Committee at Newton Elementary.

The day started off in the morning when student volunteers came to the school early to help put the final touches on the decorations. When the tasks were completed, various classes ranging from kindergarten to Grade 7 came to participate in Indian activities provided by the school, local stores, and students.

These activities included mendhi (henna), saree tying, turban tying, story telling, writing in Punjabi, jewelery viewing and last but not least, The Five Days of Diwali were posted on the walls. Grade 7 students and parents did creative designs on staff and students' hands. Jewelery donated by a store was displayed and viewed by the whole school. The turban and saree tying were quite popular, but not as popular as the mendhi station.

After all these activities were enjoyed by half of the school, the students of Grade 7 took their positions to serve the "langar"(lunch). The delicious langar was provided by the nearby gudwara called Singh Sabha. The parent volunteers helped prepare the lunch at the gudwara and helped serve it to the students with the Grade 7 students. Each Grade 7 student was paired with a parent volunteer. After the lunch, everyone commended the student volunteers and the teachers for the delicous Indian cuisine that was prepared for the school.

After the lunch break, the Diwali celebration continued and classes were still allowed to participate. Unfortunately, the school day finally came to an end. But day will always be remembered as the Festival of Lights at Newton Elementary.
