SAFA Arts Youth Nights

AJ production Vancouver B.C. and Jhanji Films Pvt. Ltd. Mumbai have launched their first production of a Hindi feature film. Music director Nikul Vinay has recorded two songs and other recordings are on the way. Lyrics writer is Faiz Ahmid. Film director is Abdul Kayam. Shooting will start soon in India and Canada. Main casting is underway in Mumbai and we will be auditioning soon in Canada for many Indo-Canadian roles. Haunted Barn

Delta Police: Crime Prevention Week

The Delta Police are participating in Crime Prevention week (November 1-7) by offering the following information sessions throughout the community: Delta Cable will be airing a segment on Car Seat Safety November 1 at 9:30 p.m. and again on November 2 at 9 p.m. A follow-up to that will be on November 6 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Tsawwasen Community Police Station where certified "Child Safety Restraint" personnel will be on hand to check your child seat and answer questions you might have. The Tsawwasen CoPS office will also have an Emergency Preparedness and home security display with brochures and a sample 3 day emergency kit on hand during the entire week. Stop in for cake and coffee on Nov 7 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. to view the display and see what other programs and services are available at the CoPS office. Rotary Club of Vancouver, Fraserview

This year the club has decided to raise US$300,000 to improve the living environment of a small population of a village named Bhamboi located in the state of Punjab, India. The project envisages to provide clean drinking water, proper sewage system, paved streets and roads, and adequate infrastructure for providing basic education to this area with the support of Rotary International, Rotary District 5040, Rotary Club Batala, Punjab, India, and other business and charitable organizations. Delta Police Internet Safety Seminars

Delta Police are offering two free Internet Safety Seminars to parents and their kids. The idea behind this is to give the parents information about what is involved with their children being online, and to educate the kids as to the safety concerns surrounding the pictures and information they post online. Delta Museum and Archives

New extended hours of operations and public hours. The Museum facilities at 4858 Delta Street in Ladner Village are now open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Tuesday to Saturday. The Archives are now open to the public for research and consultation from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Tuesday to Friday with no lunchtime closures and from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m., Saturdays. Summer hours will also include Sundays to allow the Delta Museum and Archives to fully participate in the many summer community events happening all over Delta. The Delta Museum and Archives' professional staff is also available by phone and e-mail Monday to Saturday 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.



South Asian Women's Network Weekly Group

Novelist Giani Kesar Singh

Punjabi Lakhik Munch Vancouver is going to honour novelist Giani Kesar Singh by publishing his commemoration book at the beginning of 2007. He was the first Canadian Punjabi novelist who wrote about the Gadar Party, Indian Independence and other themes and needs no introduction. PICS: IMMPowerBC Program

Are you a skilled / professional immigrant looking for employment in your field? PICS offers the IMMPowerBC program featuring: credentials and skills assessment; work experience placements: skills and language upgrading; work with a career consultant - with 66 per cent of the costs paid by the province of BC. To be eligible, individuals must: be a landed immigrant in Canada five years or less; be a certified professional, technician or tradesperson in their native country with at least five years experience in their field or industry; and have good English (intermediate level or above). This is a BC Skills Connect for Immigrants Program, a provincial initiative funded and managed by the Ministry of Economic Development.



Richmond Multicultural Concerns Society

LEAD Program for Immigrant Women. This program will take place every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon (12:30-2:30 p.m.) until mid-December. The goal of LEAD is to assist immigrant women to gain confidence in their ability to participate in an English-speaking Canadian context and to become involved in the community in a way which is meaningful and relevant to them. Chess

Teens and kids ages 8 and up can now show off their chess moves at two locations of Surrey Public Library. Chess will be played at the Newton Library on Wednesdays, 3:30-5 p.m. and at the Guildford Library on Thursdays, 3:30-5:30 p.m. It's free but participants must already know how to play. If you have your own chess set, bring it with you. We will have some sets available. No registration is required for the Guildford Library but you do need to register for chess at the Newton Library by calling 604-596-7401 (ext. 6) or visiting the Library at 13795-70th Avenue. The Guildford Library is located at 15105-105th Avenue.



Ikebana Art

Richmond Multicultural Concerns Society invites you to join Ikebana Art Club (Japanese flower arrangement). This group gets together on the first Wednesday of every month. Pacific Immigrant Resources Society

Sponsoring Access New Westminster Project which will provide training for newcomers. The purpose of the program is to help immigrants to take leadership roles in the community. This is an absolutely free training for immigrants. If you live or work in New Westminster; have at least an upper intermediate level of English (spoken and written); have established in Canada (i.e. have gone through the initial settlement process.); are enthusiastic about becoming more involved in civic life and perhaps playing a leadership role; are able to commit to 25 hours of training (seven three-hour sessions and one four-hour session.) The training sessions will be held from October to December 2006 and will be scheduled to accommodate the majority of the participants. (There is a possibility that they could be held in the evenings or on Saturdays.); are able to commit to a practicum experience, which will involve developing and delivering a Newcomer Survey and/or developing and delivering a Newcomer Booth. Urdu Classes: Volunteer Teachers

The free Urdu learning classes conducted by the Canada Urdu Association is in progress. The association, with all its limited resources, is trying its best to accommodate each and everyone. However, our current pool of volunteer teachers is overburdened by the enormous response. We, therefore, are in need of more volunteer teachers in almost all areas of the Lower Mainland, particularly in Vancouver area. New Girls' Program

The City of Surrey, Parks, Recreation, and Culture Department in partnership with the School District and The League of Ordinary People are implementing a new program targeted at girls ages 12-17. The program offers numerous new social and recreational opportunities as part of the "It's A Girl Thing" program. PICS popular Job Finding Club is a two-week program geared at helping immigrants and newcomers to Canada find successful employment. Learn how to write a fantastic resume and cover letter, gain valuable interview techniques and knowledge of the local labour market and more. The JFC runs for the first two weeks of each and every month. You can also learn effective job search strategies by working one-on-one with a Case Manager through the Individual Job Search Program. If you qualify, PICS Vancouver offers a Wage Subsidy Program where you'll get paid work experience. PICS Vancouver has been serving the community for over 9 years. Free Multilingual Job Search

If you need help with your job search, call PICS at 604-596-7722 or visit the office at Unit # 109, 12414 82nd Avenue, Surrey. Clients will be assisted through two weeks Job Finding Club, or through short-term Focused Job Search Workshops for resume preparation, interviewing skills, and learning how to use the Internet as a job search tool. Professional immigrants can join Job Mentoring Program to learn more about their chosen fields. There is no fee for the job search programs and clients get free access to the Internet, photocopier, fax machines, computers, printers, job leads and other useful resources. The multi-lingual counsellors at PICS Employment Programs provide job search assistance in English, Punjabi, Hindi, and Urdu languages. PICS has helped thousands of clients in getting jobs through free job search programs and can help you too. The government of Canada has contributed funding to this initiative.
