Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf demonstrated the mettle that keeps him alive and in power in Pakistan during his visit to the United States this week. The first phase - from first arrivals till 1947 - was a valiant struggle for survival in Canada by our pioneers. They faced insurmountable challenges. Institutionalized racism, the Exclusion Act, the Komagata Maru, attempts at extradition to British Honduras and denial of the basic right to vote were some of the huge challenges faced by our ancestors. Their lives were complicated further by utterly discriminating treatment with respect to housing, job opportunities, civil rights and immigration.
