MOVIE REVIEW
Elegant Evil!
By ROBERT WALDMAN

No one will forget the horrific events of Sept. 11, 2001. While Canadian troops are busily defending freedom in far off places in the world along comes an important reminder of why we must defend our values and stop madmen in their wake. Five years after terrorists attacked North America and the civilized world we get to witness first hand a fact-based account of the fourth plane that missed its intended target. Universal Pictures deserves all the credit in the world for not glamourizing this tragedy, but reminding us of the events and heroism exhibited by 40 ordinary people in United 93, a soaring tale of courage under fire now on view at The Granville 7, Oakridge, Empire Studio 12, Colossus and Famous Players Silver City cites around B.C.

People looking for a special effects laden blockbuster with Hollywood stars should wait until Mission Impossible 3 comes out. Here we have a penetrating look, told in real-time, of the events on that fateful day. Early on we see the preparation of the attackers as they use God as their guide to kill. Brief moments of praying are short-shift as a group of well-dressed, well-kept militants manage to freely board a United Airlines flight on route from Newark to San Francisco.

On board the plane we see normal, every day people go about their business. Shots on the ground show the daily activities at flight centers in New Jersey and along the Eastern Seaboard. Busy as usual, the controllers get the shock of their lives when planes suddenly lose communication, go missing, and two-strike a New York skyscraper.

Amidst the chaos on the ground and in the air we learn exactly what happened aboard United Flight 93. Brave passengers, sensing the inevitable, decide to alter the terrorist's plans in a display of heroism second to none.

Director/writer Paul Greengrass (The Bourne Supremacy) uses actual cell-phone recordings of those hijacked communicating with loved ones to show the gravity of the situation. Back on the ground one can't help but get caught up in the hysteria as the military planners and airline traffic controllers spring into action and give their all to thwart more crimes against humanity while trying to minimize the impact of the destruction.

Tension just abounds in this 113-minute film that's told in real time. Greengrass carefully recreates the actual hijacking and the panic engineered by a group of madmen. People of all ages who value freedom should see this film.

United 93 (14A) Rating: * * * * *
