Breaking through the iron cage of mainstream media
Media, as a window of the world, ideally should reflect all facets of society using an informative and unbiased approach. But mainstream media does not look into detailed aspects of one particular cultural group. Hence, the name mainstream media. What often drives their coverage is what the broad base of their readers wants to read. Therefore, niche categories are neglected or ignored. This neglect opens doors for culturally specific media. I wish to examine the influence of the South Asian ethnic media on their community especially in the context of empowering an ethnic group as well as to identify some of its limitations.

Under 12 Surrey United 94 win Coastal Cup Championship
The Under 12 Surrey United 94 won the BC Coastal Cup Championship by Metro Ford Ajax 1-0 this past weekend. The Under 12 boys final featured two excellent technical soccer teams and some of the best soccer during the entire Coastal Cup finals.

Guru Nanak Mission Society Raises Big Bucks For Punjab Hospital
Balbir Singh Saini, the Principal Secretary of the Hospital in Punjab, was the chief guest for the Guru Nanak Mission Society of BC-organized event. The society works in conjunction with Guru Nanak Mission Hospital in Punjab to fight drug and alcohol abuse, grown gender gap and AIDS - which is now an epidemic in India with the largest cases anywhere in the world.

Vaisakhi Mela Show at Surrey's Newton Elementary
At Newton Elementary there is a special program offered at the Grade 5 level which students can continue with in high school. It is called the Punjabi Pilot. In Grade 5 you can pick French or Punjabi Pilot as a second language. Now you're probably thinking that there are only Punjabi kids in this program, but you're wrong because there are different types of people involved in this program.

Kim Bolan's Air India book wins prestigious award
The John Wesley Dafoe Foundation announced this week that Vancouver Sun reporter Kim Bolan is the winner of its 2005 book prize for distinguished writing on Canada and/or Canada's place in the world. The award, which includes a cash prize of $10,000, will be presented at the Annual Dafoe Book Prize Dinner on May 17 in Winnipeg to Bolan for "Loss of Faith: How the Air-India Bombers Got Away with Murder," published by McClelland & Stewart.
