Vancouver follows Surrey in proclaiming April 15 Vaisakhi Day
Back in November 1994 it was the City of Vancouver under then mayor Larry Campbell that decided to celebrate Diwali in the Council Chamber and issue a proclamation recognizing this important festival for the South Asian community. When The VOICE wrote about it and commented: "No word yet what Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum is doing about Diwali. Surrey has more Indo-Canadians than other city in BC," a controversy ensued and Surrey scrambled to recognize Diwali, too.

The initial results of the year-long investigations were unveiled on Wednesday by representatives from the United States Attorney's Office, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) Border Patrol.

Spring is a Time of Rebirth for Many Cultures
It is at this time that Sikhs worldwide observe Vaisakhi, Northern India's harvest festival. It is important to many Sikhs as a season for reaping the benefits of hard work. This day is especially important as the day the Khalsa identity was born. This identity continues to be the contemporary identity for a Sikh life throughout the world. In British Columbia we have Canada's largest Punjabi-speaking community and it is only fitting that Vaisakhi celebrations in the lower mainland will be the largest anywhere in North America.
