VANCOUVER WHITECAPS FC 2 – SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES 2

Reyna scores first goal of the season in 2-2 draw with Quakes

VANCOUVER: Vancouver Whitecaps FC (4W-5L-3D) played to a second straight 2-2 draw on Wednesdaynight at BC Place, earning a share of the spoils with San Jose Earthquakes (2W-5L-3D).

Yordy Reyna scored his first goal of the season and added a helper, while Felipe recorded two assists for the second straight outing – increasing his team-leading tally to five this season. The ‘Caps created a number of chances on the night, outshooting San Jose 22-16, but were forced to settle for a point.

There was plenty of action in this one from the get go.

After the two teams traded chances within the first five minutes, Cristian Techera opened the scoring for Vancouver in the 19th minute, finishing from the top of the six after a nice little throughball from Reyna.

It was a deserved early lead for the ‘Caps, who looked lively throughout the opening half.

But San Jose responded in first-half injury time through Danny Hoesen, who got in behind the ‘Caps back line and lobbed Brian Rowe to level the score. And they would strike again on a 53rd-minute counter, taking the lead through Nick Lima’s left-footed curler from the top of the area.

The ‘Caps kept fighting, though, and would quickly get their equalizer in the 64th minute.

After nearly connecting on a Marcel de Jong cross just a few minutes prior, Reyna got a second opportunity and this time headed in the Canadian’s delivery off the back of a Quakes defender.

Reyna had a glorious chance to score a late winner in the 84th minute, forcing a turnover and getting in behind the Quakes back line, but could not beat Andrew Tarbell. It was a busy outing for the Quakes keeper, who helped the visitors steal a point with seven saves on the night.

The ‘Caps continue their busy week on Saturday, facing FC Dallas in what is expected to be a scorching hot afternoon at Toyota Stadium (1 p.m. PT kickoff on CTV, TSN, and TSN 1040 radio).
