In a total of 267,000 students who took the AP Calculus AB Exam in 2012, only six students in the world received the perfect score, answering every multiple –choice question correctly and earning full points on each of the essays in the free-response section of the exam. Sargun Bajaj, currently in Grade 12 at Tamanawis Secondary in Surrey, British Columbia is one of this elite group of six students who earned a perfect score on the Advanced Placement Calculus examination.

Advanced Placement Exams are based on a composite score of 1 to 5, where a 5 is equivalent to a grade of A in the corresponding college course. Only 15.5% of all the students who write the exam, worldwide, fall into this top category of 5. However at Tamanawis Secondary this statistic is shattered with 85% of the 62 Grade 12 Tamanawis Secondary students receiving a 5, and a 100% received a 4 or 5. Extraordinary!

The foundation of the success in Math is a tribute to the team of fine teachers of Tamanawis Secondary. Sargun Bajaj gives special credit to Mr. Singh, the Math Honours and AP Calculus teacher for inspiring him to excellence. Sargun, speaking to the Grade 11 Math Honours Class, said “ It is all about understanding the concepts.” Mr. Singh works countless hours to support the Tamanawis Secondary students in their learning and love of Mathematics.

The Advanced Placement Exams are written and scored by college professors from around the world, and are typically designed to cover a full-year of intensive, college- level knowledge and skills. It is rare for a high school student to earn every point possible on the exam. Sargun Bajaj was a Grade 11 student at Tamanawis Secondary when he wrote the exam- an unimaginable accomplishment based on the 3.7 million AP exams that were taken by 2.1 million students in 2012.

Tamanawis Secondary offers AP (Advanced Placement in University) courses in Calculus, World History and Chemistry. The College Board’s AP Program describes Sargun Bajaj’s accomplishment as “an extraordinary academic achievement”. “In a wonderful and engaging school of student learning, Sargun Bajaj’s accomplishment highlights the world of Tamanawis Secondary where passionate educators inspire young adults in their pursuit of excellence” proudly states Principal Margaux Molson. As the school saying goes….”DISCOVER TAMANAWIS!”
