It’s not every day you get to play basketball with an Olympic athlete but that’s exactly what happened at the James Whiteside Elementary School.

The Richmond RCMP Basketball team faced off against Olympic rower & London 2012 silver medalist Darcy Marquardt & her team of grade seven students as part of Richmond RCMP’s School Sports Program. The RCMP team was able to pull off a 16 to 14 win.

Marquardt, a Richmond resident & an alumni of James Whiteside Elementary, spoke to students before the game & shared her experiences as an Olympic athlete. Students listened attentively as Marquardt described her strict training regimen & dietary needs which has enabled her to become an elite athlete.

In May, Richmond RCMP announced their new School Sports Program, an initiative that focuses on strengthening ties with youth in the community. The program provides local youth with the opportunity to play sports with officers they might not otherwise interact with.

The next school sports event is scheduled to take place at McKinney Elementary School sometime in November.
