The weekend of October 20-21, Panorama India, with the generous support of Scotiabank, presented the York-Osgoode High School Debating Tournament at York University. An elaborately planned event spanning two days, this tournament was the qualifier round for the extremely prestigious Oxford Cup to be held later in the UK.

Organized by two debating clubs at York – the York Debating Society (YDS) and Panorama India, the tournament brought 124 debaters from Ontario and Quebec high schools to York campus. “The organizers including tournament directors, adjudicators and volunteersand Panorama India board members did an amazing job and put up a great debating forum; the youthful energy and enthusiasm was spectacular. Panorama is happy to have been involved in this initiative under our EDUCATE mandate”, said Jibanjit Tripathy, Chair of Panorama India. He also elaborated about Panorama India for the benefit of participating students and guests, its mandates revolving around 3 pillars EDUCATE, CELEBRATE & COLLABORATE, and expressed gratitude and appreciation to Scotiabank for partnering in this endeavor.

The event was a stunning display of young debating talents. Performed in the British Parliamentary style, the tournament opened with a show debate with award-winning debaters from York University. The final was the culmination of a weekend of debating between schools including 5 rounds and semifinals. The motion for debate in the Final Round was “This House believes that developing countries should prefer the example of India over China”. Richmond Hill High School was the Tournament Champion and Olympiads School was the Winning Junior Team (Grades 7-9).Maria Clara Pereira from Scotiabank gave away the prizes to the winning teams. The Top Speaker was from Northern Secondary School. Panorama India presented an audience participation award for $200. York University’s Department of Political Science presented two awards of $100 each, one for the top team and one for the best speaker.
