Ferozepur- Inspite of measures claimed to have been undertaken by the administration to check illegal mining of sand, the process continues unabated Ferozepur. So much so that till date, the Industry Department claims to have recommended registration of cases against 36 land owners, besides issuing over 40 challans against erring persons owing allegiance to the sand mafia. Still, the process is allegedly going on in a clandestine manner allegedly under the patronage of the authorities concerned.

Sources said mostly the illegal mining of sand was taking place at odd hours in order to evade any kind of interception by the authorities concerned. At times, even the top surface of sand is filled with earth or any other material to dodge the authorities. The price of the sand has also escalated manifold, which has affected the construction industry. The common man is also bearing the brunt due to the inflated prices. Officials said that as per government policy, the price of a tractor-trailer filled with sand should be around Rs 800 each. However, the same was being sold at Rs 2,500 per trailer.
