There are many examples of narrowly held contrarian views becoming mainstream, gradually or otherwise. Anti-smoking crusaders ‘cried in the wilderness’ for years; today smoking is culturally intolerable and widely banned— in some places even smoking outside is prohibited. To smoke in another person’s house or car without their express permission, indeed even to ask is taboo.
